Which Type of Terry Nappy?
Terry nappies - or "real nappies" - are an environmentally friendly and convenient option, but which type of nappy is right for you?
Our shaped terry nappies are available in two types: those with a type fastening strip (known as “Aplix”), and those that fastens with the special “Nappy Nippa” plastic grip. Both types have some advantages and disadvantages:
Velcro / Aplix Terry Nappies
The Aplix strip is a quick and easy way to fasten a terry nappy: you simply lift up the front piece and fix the side pieces in the same way as most disposable nappies. This option is particularly suitable for wriggly small babies, or for parents who are shy of using the slightly more complicated clip fastening.
Clip-Fastening Nappies
These nappies come without any type of integral fastening at all, and are held in place with a small plastic clip called a “Nappy Nippa”. It has plastic teeth that grip into the loops of the terry without penetrating the cloth, you simply hold the nappy together and then hook the gripper on in three easy steps to hold the nappy firmly in place.
The Nappy Nippa is not as tricky to use as it looks and offers two major advantages over Velcro fastening cloth nappies. Firstly, it allows for a better fit than Aplix because the side flaps can be pulled down as well as across. Secondly (and most importantly for parents of toddlers) it is much harder for baby to remove.
Other Types of Terry Nappy
The Kids Window only sells fitted terry nappies by Tots Bots, because we believe them to be the best option by far for babies and parents alike. Other types of re-useable nappy, such as flat terry nappies and all-in-one type nappies were found to be much harder to use or less durable than Tots Bots. For more information, see
